A message that stayed with me, many years ago

Back when I was 18, I submitted an essay to a national contest interpreting a novel I admired. While I didn’t win, I received this thoughtful note from the author. It was a small but powerful encouragement early in my writing life.

I’ve translated it for clarity, but I’m including the original too, because the language carries a warmth I still remember.

To dare to put on paper what one feels so that others may read it is a brave act; you should be proud of your work. This has been, for me, the answer to a conversation I started years ago with you through my books. Your text is the greatest prize I’ve received in my entire career as a writer. That’s why I want us to make a commitment. You and I: We will continue to be brave. We will keep swimming against the currents of mediocrity. We will keep believing in our dreams. And we will not give up.

We are made to leave a trace of light in this world. Sending you a big hug.

“Atreverse a poner en papel lo que uno siente para que otros lo lean, es un acto valiente; debes estar orgullosa de tu trabajo. Él ha sido para mí la respuesta a una conversación que inicié hace años contigo a través de mis libros. Tu texto es el mayor premio que he recibido en toda mi trayectoria como escritor. Por eso quiero que hagamos un – compromiso. Tú y yo: seguiremos siendo valientes. Seguiremos nadando contra las corrientes de la mediocridad. Seguiremos creyendo en nuestros sueños.
